A Total Healing Solution

Join me and my client on his scar journey.  This client had an accident; there was massive amounts of trauma to the lower extremities.  This client suffered from what is called a deglove injury.  A degloving injury is typically defined by a severe high-energy trauma where the skin and underlying structures resembling a glove/ sock like injury are removed.

This client had surgery to reattach the skin and tendon work.  He was treated with a wound vac, and other physical therapy.  He finished what the insurance provided, and he was left with a foot that he could not completely put weight on.  He had difficulty with walking, pain, and straightening out the second and third toe.

When he first came to me, I could tell that the wound had not healed, in the best way possible.  It had healed with a wound vac, with their hopes of not getting infected, and closing the wound.  However, sometimes when the wound closes too fast the underlying structures are not healed completely, other issues can arise.  Healing from the base of the wound is very important so that if he were to any another, even minor injury the entire skin and top structures are not ripped off due to minor trauma.

We are also dealing with contractures.  Contractures is when the skin heals without the being “educated” on how to heal correctly and the tissues shorten.  As you can see in the toes being bent.  The skin, and the tendons are now in a shortened position.  This is a problem because now he cannot place his body weight completely evenly on the right foot.  It is also causing him pain, and difficulty with him returning to his very active lifestyle. It will become a balance issue when he his older, and if it is not treated ASAP these contractures can get even worse.

First I had to address the swelling and the incomplete healing that took place under the scar.  There was trapped blood, and decreased communication with all of the cells, tissue, and tendons.  After the swelling and blood exchange became to improve, now we can see the surgical scars.  I am trying to make the scars more flexible to improve pain and function.  Then I am going to address the shortened tendons and contracted skin.
