These very fine sterile needles (dry needles) can be inserted into trigger points, muscles, tendons, scars, and around nerves to directly change the way that the body is functioning. These needles can release scars that are restricting normal muscular movement. The needles encourage collagen wherever they are placed. They force the brain to release neurotransmitters that cause relaxation to muscle spasms or trigger points, which in turn promote healing.
Inserting solid filament needles into and around the scar assist in releasing the tissue and allow for pain reduction and increased mobility. Here is a study from PubMed that further researches these findings. There is preliminary evidence that the "surrounding the dragon" needling technique is a beneficial treatment for patients suffering from scar pain and other scar-related symptoms and can facilitate wound healing and make this process less painful.

What Is Dry Needling? (clevelandclinic.org)
Two of the classes that I took were in Cleveland, OH where a significant portion of the students worked within the Cleveland Clinic offering these services as "standard of care." There the clinicians focused on trigger points. Whether it was for treatment of pain, muscular imbalance, scars, migraines, or many other types of neuromuscular imbalances. The other classes that I took looked more into dysfunction of the neuromuscular system, and took a full body approach to resolving any issue.
