A concussion is an injury to the brain, labeled a traumatic brain injury. It typically is from impact from your brain hitting the skull. A concussion can happen from a fall, a car accident, something hitting you in the head, or it can come from contact in sports. What the medical community is now realizing is that these injuries have a cumulative effect. If the concussion is not allowed to resolve, then the trauma that is in the brain is magnified with each subsequent injury. They are now realizing that these symptoms are appearing more intense later in life.
I have personally worked with quite a few professional athletes when they were admitted into a skilled nursing facility. When they arrived, they could walk, talk, toilet by themselves, and feed themselves. In six months, they were unable to walk without significant assistance and a walker, most were nonverbal, they were dependent with toileting, and they required assistance to eat. The damaged to the brain is very real, even though some of the symptoms people present with appear to be mild.
What is the best way to treat a concussion? In my experience I believe that it is a team effort to treat concussions. It also depends on the severity of the injury. In my office I offer dry needling to increase blood flow, improve neurologic communication, promote normalizing of the nervous system, and it allows the muscles to relax and support the head. I treat muscle imbalances all throughout the head, neck, and spine. There are other modalities such as red light that can be utilized.
