Pain is subjective. What one person feels is not what another person feels. All pain is real, and it can and should be treated. There are many modalities that are available to treat pain. What should you do if you have been to the medical doctors, and they have given you a prescription to interrupt the pain cycle or how your brain interprets the pain. That doesn’t treat the pain, that treats the symptom of pain. Pain is a warning signal that your brain gives you to alert you that something is wrong. It shouldn’t be ignored, it should be heeded and questioned. What did I do differently? Why does this joint or muscle hurt? Should I stop the activity? Do I need to rest?
Pain that lasts longer than 30 days is considered chronic pain. When people suffer from chronic pain their brain changes. There are emotional changes that occur also. The body’s warning system has been on too long and the root cause of the problem has not been resolved. When you are treated with dry needling the nervous system is impacted in a positive way. The sympathetic (the nervous system in a stressed state: flight, flight, or freeze) has taken over and is release cortisol. When the Vagas nerve and other nerves are treated with dry needling the parasympathetic nervous system is able to take over (Peace: rest and digest) In my clinic treating the cause of the pain and returning the brain back to a healthier state is the goal.
Dry needling can be very effective for treating pain; however, expectations need to be managed. If you are suffering from chronic pain regular sessions will need to be considered. One or two sessions can help, but your brain needs to break the pain cycle from this long-term condition.
